Abstract

The current research focuses on improving bearing capacity when a skirted footing is placed on a cohesionless soil stratum. A commercial finite element limit analysis package has been employed to compute the bearing capacity. The results suggested that using skirts played a significant role in improving the bearing capacity of the stratum on which it is placed. The present paper uses a finite element package, OPTUMG2, to find the results of skirted footings in both static and seismic cases and compare the results of its improvement for both fixed and seismic issues. The bearing capacity is calculated in bound form using optum g2 software. Scale effect studies have also been tested for variation of b with respect to bearing capacity factor N. Keywords: Bearing capacity, skirted footings, seismic, static, foundations
