Abstract

Water supply is the transportation / conveyance of water from its source to the point of consumption. Access to safe water supply is very important in water resource development and good sanitation contributes significantly to healthy living among the people. Access to water supply and sanitation are basic human needs and rights. Assessment of water supply, sanitation and hygiene practices were carried out at the Ikole campus of the Federal University of Oye, Ekiti State, Nigeria. The laboratory analysis of water quality in the university campus was carried out. The values of the physiochemical parameters such as pH value, turbidity, conductivity, total dissolved solid, chloride, sulphate, nitrate, total hardness, total alkalinity, magnesium, iron and microbiological parameters such as total bacterial count, total coli form and e-coil were all determined. The sanitation condition and infrastructures provided by the university management were observed. From the research work, it was found that the amount of chloride present in the given water sample is 219.8-340.32. Total dissolved solids ranges from 5.50-25.00mg/l. The total hardness of water ranges from 98.00 to 168.00 which is within the World Health Organisation standard. Sulphate concentration ranges were insignificant. On hygienic condition, offensive odour was perceived and the stagnant waters were seen on the floor of the toilets. As a result, students prefer going to the nearby bushes to defecate and urinate when pressed which contribute to the pollution of the environment and contamination of the groundwater. Waste bins provided by the school were all in state of dysfunction due to poor maintenance of the facilities. Recommendations that will further enhance access to water and good hygiene practice were made for policy makers. Keywords: Water supply, Hygiene, Physiochemical parameters, Sanitation, landfill.
