The growing demand for efficient management of residential resources has led to the development of remotely accessible control systems that enable users to monitor and regulate household utilities from a distance. These systems aim to improve safety, reduce resource wastage, and enhance user convenience by providing centralized control over utilities such as electricity, water, and gas. This paper presents a comprehensive review of remote residential utility control systems, focusing on their architectural designs, communication mechanisms, and operational workflows. Various existing approaches are analyzed based on their underlying technologies, control strategies, and system integration capabilities. The study further examines key challenges, including interoperability limitations, communication reliability, security concerns, and scalability issues, which hinder the effectiveness of current solutions. In addition, essential design considerations for developing robust and efficient systems are identified, emphasizing modularity, responsiveness, and user accessibility. Based on the critical analysis of existing literature, significant research gaps are highlighted, particularly in the areas of unified control, seamless integration of multiple utilities, and efficient coordination between system components.
