Comparison of Destructive and Non-Destructive Tests on Conventional Concrete by Replacement of Fine Aggregate with Quarry Dust

Abstract

Concrete is the most widely used construction material in the world and testing of concrete specimens plays an important role in assessing structural strength and durability. This study presents a detailed comparison between Destructive Tests (DT) and Non-Destructive Tests (NDT) conducted on M20 and M25 grade concrete in which fine aggregate (sand) is partially replaced with Quarry Dust (QD) at 0%, 5%, 10%, 20%, and 30% by weight. Destructive tests included compressive strength and split tensile strength, while non-destructive tests included the Rebound Hammer Test (RHT) and the Ultrasonic Pulse Velocity Test (UPV). Results demonstrate that replacing sand with 20% quarry dust yields the highest compressive and tensile strengths for both M20 and M25 grades. A good correlation was found between compressive strength, rebound number, and ultrasonic pulse velocity, confirming the reliability of NDT methods for concrete strength assessment. Addition of quarry dust beyond 20% reduced workability and strength due to increased water absorption.
